Forecasting U.S. State-Level Carbon Dioxide Emissions

چکیده

Due to criticisms of potential identification issues within spatial panel data models, this study contributes to the literature by comparing forecasts of U.S. state-level carbon dioxide emissions against empirical reality using panel data models with and without spatial effects. From a policy standpoint, understanding how to predict emissions is important for designing climate change mitigation policies. From a statistical standpoint, it is important to test spatial econometrics models to see if they are a valid strategy to describe the underlying data. We find, unlike past studies, that non-spatial OLS estimators perform best in one to two-year-ahead forecasts, but the spatial panel data models perform better over a two to five year out-ofsample horizon.

Predicting the Evolution of CO2 Emissions in Bahrain with Automated Forecasting Methods

The 2012 Doha meeting established the continuation of the Kyoto protocol, the legally-binding global agreement under which signatory countries had agreed to reduce their carbon emissions. Contrary to this assumed obligation, all G20 countries with the exception of France and the UK saw significant increases in their CO2 emissions over the last 25 years, surpassing 300% in the case of China. Thi...

The Spatiotemporal Evolution of U.S. Carbon Dioxide Emissions: Stylized Facts and Implications for Climate Policy

We characterize the evolution of U.S. carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using an index number decomposition technique which partitions the 1963-2008 growth of states’ energy-related CO2 into changes in five driving factors: the emission intensity of energy use, the energy intensity of economic activity, the composition of states’ output, per capita income and population. Compositional change and d...

Evaluating the Influence of Country Policy on Carbon Dioxide Emissions Tradings

In this paper, we consider carbon tax and emissions trading as the national policy against the global warming problem. The attitude of the United States, whether they join the international carbon dioxide emissions trading under the Kyoto Protocol or not, will bring a large influence on the global environment and the emissions trading. Therefore, we evaluate the influence on the revenue, the pr...

The Impact of Energy, Agriculture, Macroeconomic and Human-Induced Indicators on Environmental Pollution from 1971 to 2011

In this study, the impact of energy, agriculture, macroeconomic and humaninduced indicators on environmental pollution from 1971 to 2011 is investigated using the statistically inspired modification of partial least squares (SIMPLS) regression model. There was evidence of a linear relationship between energy, agriculture, macroeconomic and human-induced indicators and carbon dioxide emissions. ...
